The Forever Saga: Flash 5 Star Review

Sean C. Sousa found me on the list of Book Blogger website and asked if I would review his book and what a delight it has been. Here is my Review of this wonderful Sci-Fi novel with a serious message for young and old.

A book I can recommend with great pleasure.

Flash takes place in present day, and contains elements of both sci-fi and fantasy while remaining a very human story. There's a family struggling to mend itself. A father fighting to overcome his troubled past. A young man trying to win over the love of his life. And an underlying theme of hope and redemption.

Synopsis for Flash:

"Long ago, the first reign of Grigori Geist nearly destroyed the Earth.
Returned from exile, Geist is secretly rebuilding his kingdom beneath Antarctica, assembling his robotic Vaucan race to war against mankind. Only one obstacle remains: the war hero known as Brian Renney.
Yet Brian is losing a battle against his fears. Scars of heart and mind linger from his days in Vietnam, fueling his failures as husband and father. This embitters his youngest son, Jason – a star athlete torn between pursuing the love of his life, and meeting the demands of a father who is far from the storied army captain he once was.
And all the while, Geist is coming for them.
In this dark hour, Brian and Jason encounter a war to end all others… and an unexpected ally who, once meant for evil, shall forever be a force for good."

At heart, Flash tells the story of a father and son who seek to mend their family in a world of giant robots and
ancient tyrants. The sci-fi frames the story, but compelling human drama is the crux of the series. Here's what critics and readers are saying:
"Great promise, inventiveness, and creativity." - Jasper de Joode, Fantasy Book Review
"It’s an impressive bit of worldbuilding...the shining secret world fits perfectly with the real world Earth." - Kirkus Reviews
"'The Forever Saga: Flash' is an exciting addition to science fiction adventure novel collections." - Midwest Book Review
"This book is such a good read it's hard to put down. I'm not usually a sci-fi fan, but once you get past the first chapter, it's clear that this book is way more than just sci-fi. It's got everything from action to romance, comedy to tragedy, and even a touch of mystery as the plot unfolds with more than a few unexpected discoveries. It's an easy read, but don't check your brain at the door; there's plenty of food for thought as the characters wrestle with deep questions of morality, purpose, and what it means to be human." - Carol
"This book has everything that you could ask from a novel! It is a perfect blend of futuristic technologies, the human spirit, the bond of friends and family, and the honor of soldiers. If you are even slightly interested in sci-fi or robots then this is a must-have book for you." - Keith

My novel currently has sixteen 5-star reviews and a 4.7 average rating on Amazon, where The Forever Saga: Flash is available in e-book and paperback formats. Flash is also available for various e-readers at the novel's official website,www.theforeversaga.com - where you'll find more info about myself and my writing.

About the Author

SEAN C. SOUSA never planned on writing a novel – that is, until the idea for The Forever Saga came along. He first conceived it as a video game design concept, then a screenplay, and finally a written work of fiction. His debut novel, The Forever Saga: Flash, marks the end of one six-year journey toward publication, and also the beginning of another: to bring his stories to a worldwide audience.

His dream is to see fiction inspire positive social change in the world, calling attention to issues of social justice and mobilizing his readership to meet the needs of those afflicted.

Mr. Sousa resides in Southern California with his wife, Shelley, and when he is not writing further adventures about the Renney family, he is usually up to socially acceptable mischief with his friends and family.

5 Star Review

A few strong messages came across from this well written book. Fast paced and well developed to give you a great plot with interesting characters and great story line. The gripping plot centered around one man that wants to control the people of the world subjecting them to manipulation and cruelty. The author engineered a whole new scientific world with nano-kinetics as the foundation of this new world. Every thing was possible with this new science but yet the horrific control soon surfaced as the plot thickens.

The greatest message from this book was the relationship between a father and son who never knew each other but yet impacted each other's lives more than possible.
Brain Renney War hero, Hockey coach and father saw the worst on the battle fields of Vietnam returned a different person. Suffered from PTSD through out his lonely years. Without faith or hope he isolated himself and scared every one away from him, demanding and abrupt in his manners. Believing that he was not good enough at the end. Fear gripped this man and gave him no rest but at the end when he faced his nightmares he came to terms with who he was and with God. Restoring his faith to an unseen God in the face of Adversary.
His character leaves much to debate about and I will leave it at that for you to discover for yourself.

I loved the play with names and words from the Word of God, making the Bible alive that would make this a good read for all readers with the love of all sci-fi and spirituality  How God works in His attempt to bring us closer to Him. To stand up and fight and never shrink away from a fight. Adversary and trails is there to shape us, mature us and bring us closer to the call of each person that loves Him.

Jason his son, who hated his father was faced with all these emotions when Brain disappeared. He struggled with his knowledge versus what he knew deep in his heart was true and at the end the truth did set him free. A strong young man that stands at the brink of his own new life, making the right choices and going after Alessa, the only woman he loves. His faith and willingness to learn making him a strong man filled with courage as he too faced many trails during the absence of his father.

Mary, Brain's wife whose faith was unwavering when her world crumbled around her, standing like a pillar for her two sons and daughter-in-law. Unshaken in the believe that her husband was more than the world or people perceived.
Scot who was always there in the back ground supporting Jason. Alessa a true friend till the end that kept Jason grounded through out all the hardships. Target by the enemy and almost ended up in prostitution but saved by Jason and his friends. An entertaining bunch that kept you smiling through out the story line.
The villains - all played their parts wonderfully to create a good entertaining read that kept you turning the pages and wondering what they will do next.
Flash the larger than life robot was the glue that kept everything together. His trails and growth a clear path for us as he get to know him better and the strength that emanates from him. Placing his trust in a mere mortal man. Willing to stand for what was right.
Each character was well developed and believable making this a recommended read.

EXCERPT

Carefully, he pulled aside her tresses. His heart gave jolt at the sight. She had taken a beating, one side of her face swollen and puffy. Great purpling welts circled her neck, fingerprints clearly visible. He cursed again. Had he just come across some murderous outlaws rather than the harmless peasants he had thought them to be? Anger boiled inside of him. If he had but given chase, he could have brought at least one of them to justice.

God’s blood, he dare not imagine what her last moments must have been like.

His throat tightened. What to do with her? He could not just leave her to rot in the woods. Jake studied her face once more with a sigh. A shame so fine a beauty should meet such an end. Even with the swelling in her face, it was clear she had been blessed with striking looks. Her unmarred cheek offered up smooth and creamy skin, and her dark lashes stood out in stark contrast. A slight scattering of freckles marched across her nose, just visible under the dried blood. Jake smiled sadly. He never understood why most women hated freckles. He thought them wonderfully enticing.

Brushing a finger across her cheek, Jake was surprised at the warmth of it. God’s teeth, if he had only come across her moments before he could have stopped such an atrocity. He pictured the men’s faces and swore he would avenge her. He would bring the outlaws to justice.

As he drew his hand away, an eyelid fluttered open. His heart leapt. Her other eye couldn’t open - it was too swollen to do so - but he could see the immediate panic in her expression. She struggled to turn onto her side to escape him, her injuries hampering her movements.

Fearing she would do herself further damage, he spoke soothingly to her. “Have no fear, lass. I’ll not harm you.”

Either her fear had consumed her or she didn’t understand him, because she continued to try to scrabble her way across the leaf-strewn ground, the dried foliage crunching as her hands clawed desperately at the soil.

Hastily, he wrapped his large hand around one arm, attempting to keep her still. She continued to struggle, in spite of her obvious pain, but her movements were limited and had little effect on his strong grip. Unsure of how to reassure her of his intentions, he grabbed at her other arm, trying to get her attention.

“Calm down, lass. I wish to help. You’ll do yourself an injury.”

She fell limp in his arms, not relaxing under his assurances, but seeming to tire of her exertions. The fear remained visibly etched on her face, but Jake took the opportunity to tuck an arm under her legs and the other under her neck so he could pull her into him. Jake thought she would scream, her mouth worked as if she meant to, but no sound came out.

Description

She set out to expose his true nature, but the secrets revealed were her own…

In the aftermath of war and revolution, cavalry officer Olivier Valencourt, the comte de Chaumenay, only wants peace. But his discovery of his deceased brother’s child in a Montmartre hovel leads to a battle of wills with the lovely but evasive American struggling to provide for him. Determined to gain custody of his nephew, Olivier sets out to win the audacious bohemian’s trust with patronage and patience, but her courage, wisdom, and innocent sensuality divert his agenda.

Painter Jeanne Delancy has good reason to despise the portrait-worthy count before she ever meets him. She believes he’s the man who seduced and deserted her friend long ago. Unfortunately, the talented and persuasive Olivier is hard to dislike or resist in person.

Conflicted by loyalty to her missing friend and her duty to the abandoned six-year-old she’s vowed to protect, Jeanne feels obligated to give the war hero the opportunity to prove he’s worthy of knowing his son. But the independent woman who thinks herself immune to temptation underestimates Olivier in many ways and reveals far more than she ever anticipates. While the strong-willed opposites struggle to reconcile their deepest longings, dangerous alliances and scandalous secrets threaten a tragic repetition of history.

Excerpt
The door opened, and the impersonal explanation he’d memorized vanished from his mind. He’d expected

to see the lithesome, titian-haired beauty he’d known long ago in Burgundy. Instead, he encountered a petite brunette in a paint-smeared smock. There was also paint in one of the corkscrews of hair which had fallen free of her chignon. Something about the woman arrested him though he deemed her unconventionally pretty at best with her wide forehead, long nose, and dainty mouth. Perhaps it was her reaction to him. He could sense the frantic beating of her heart, and her golden brown eyes telegraphed wariness.

He regretted causing her distress and hastened to explain himself. “Good afternoon. I am Olivier Valencourt.” He bowed instinctively. “I’m looking for Claudine Ardaut, and I was informed she lived here. Is she at home?”

The young woman swallowed and hesitated, clearly debating her reply. “I am not familiar with anyone by that name.”

Her French was grammatically correct, but her accent revealed her as American. It surprised him to find a foreigner in Paris now. It was unlikely that she’d come here recently. The ruins of landmarks and homes and the mass burials of the executed made Paris a tourist destination only for those with a morbid taste for tragedy. She must have come before the war. There had been little warning when France declared war against Prussia. Many foreigners found themselves trapped inside the barricades along with working-class Parisians without the resources to leave.

“I was given this address by a reliable source,” he persisted. Instinct told him she was lying.

“Are you implying that I’m lying to you?” she asked in her slow, unnatural-sounding manner of speech.

“Certainly not. I was merely hoping you might know some little detail which would enable me to find her.”

Absently, she touched her face, leaving umber fingerprints upon her cheek. He felt an irrational urge to wipe the paint from her smooth, fair skin. She was pretty by any standard, he decided.

“Why are you looking for this woman? Has she done something wrong?”

“No. I’ve come on a personal matter.”

If anything, she looked even more defensive. Her enormous eyes filled with censure as if she knew what he’d done and the ramifications. The guilt he’d been trying to suppress for weeks finally assailed him. If only he’d kept his opinions to himself, so many lives might have turned out differently.

Her evasiveness maddened him. He only wished to complete his mission and be done with the whole matter, and she was keeping him from accomplishing that. He’d overcome far more challenging obstacles than a reticent female. He’d been good at persuading women at one time though he could scarcely recall those years now. Searching for some way to draw her out, his glance fell upon her voluminous smock. Sometimes the best strategy was the most obvious one. “You are a painter, I see. I recently came into possession of some property and could use some new art for decoration. Do you have anything for sale?”

She frowned, instantly suspicious. “Nothing is finished.”

“I know how you artists are. Nothing is ever completed to your satisfaction.” He took a step toward the threshold. “Why don’t you allow me to be the judge?”

She held her ground. “I’m certain my style would be too modern to suit your taste.”

She folded her arms about her waist, and his eyes were instantly drawn to her small form. She possessed a better figure than he’d thought, full round breasts and a tiny waist. A strange sort of agitation arose inside him. With astonishment, he recognized the sensation as lust. He hadn’t felt desire for so many months he’d feared he might never regain that part of his nature. Though he felt reassured that all was in working order, the inappropriateness of his irrational attraction irritated him. “And you know my taste.”

She surveyed his uniform from his polished boots to his fitted jacket with its neat rows of small gold buttons and black braiding. “You are an officer of some sort. A military man. I would guess you are conservative and view art primarily in terms of investment.”

He’d never given a second thought to art, but he didn’t appreciate her making assumptions about him. “There you are wrong. As it happens, I prefer more modern pieces. Besides, your refusal to let me judge your work only makes me more curious about it.”

My 5 Star Review

A lovely Historical Romance with an intriguing plot that keeps you glued to the pages till the very end. The story plays off in France after the Revolution and its citizens had to make away for themselves with what ever was at hand. Women could now venture out and make money of their own, being more independent than what was used too. Some people especially the rich did not adapt to this new changes, considered them far better than the rest of their fellow citizens.
The dramatic changes are masterly written into the characters personas to give you a good idea of what life had to be after the revolt. The difficulties that these women faced and the hypocriticies surrounding this. Today as women we think it is our right to live independent, earn our own money and follow a successful career. But this was not always the case and the author did write a wonderful plot line placing the emphasis on the new culture that we take for granted.
Each woman in this book had to deal with a new life, doing the best they can to put food on the table, each one chose a different route. You learn about their daily struggles and how they became stronger with each passing day.
You learn of some men that tries to manipulate them in doing their own bidding, using them and threw them away at the end when they were not useful anymore. With much heartfelt and compassion the author draws you into their lives giving you a believable story you can identify with.
Jeanne Henri Delancy disappear from her country after a tragic accident and landed in Paris. The land for artists and new thinkers. As an artist herself she struggles to keep it together. Trying the best she can to be a provider for Alex a young boy that was left behind after his mother has disappeared without trace and an idea who the father is but not willing to look for him.
Olivier Vanlencourt, injured in the battle, lost his brother during the war and blamed himself for his death. Realizing that he had to look for the lost boy and bring him back to his family estate where he belongs.
When these two meet the story became very interesting, with many secrets and lies between them and a lot of desire to boot these two struggled to find a middle ground concerning Alex.
Family members that tries to separate the two lovers because they new the best for each but later do change their minds about the other. A jealous woman who can not accept that Olivier was not interested and a delusional artist who thought Jeanne was his property.
With twists and turns through out the story line the book entertain you as the reader. Learning about all the artists and the composers from that time and the obstacles they faced.
A book I can recommend to all historical readers that loves to indulge in a good book.

EXCERPT #3
“Do you love Holly?” I felt him stiffen, maybe because I’d caught him unawares, or maybe because talking

slush wasn’t his thing, but we’d always been honest with each other, answered the questions that mattered.

“I think so. I thought I loved Sal, but this is different. I’d never let her down and hurt her, if that’s what you’re asking.”

“No, it isn’t that. Why is it different?”

There was a long pause, but that was Dane, he was thinking. So, for once, I let him and didn’t interrupt him. I wanted to hear his answer, not mine.

“Maybe because I’m a bit older, more mature, different expectations I guess. Why?”

“It’s different with Ollie too.” I was half talking to myself, but it was so quiet I knew he could hear and the warmth of his body against mine felt safe. “I was mad about him when we were kids.” I laughed, I had been. I’d never thought about it before, when it had all gone wrong it set a different perspective on things. But I had been mad about him, he’d been wicked and bad with a sexy, naughty daredevil streak that made my heart race. He’d scared me and excited me and I’d have followed him wherever he’d led. I hadn’t wanted safe and secure, and Ollie hadn’t been. But he had been kind and considerate too, I’d never felt like he’d push me too far or that he’d abandon me. I’d felt like it was never going to end.

“I was mad about him, but I loved him, it was a kind of uncomplicated, mad passionate, no holds barred thing I think, because I didn’t know any better.” I picked at the grass. “I came down here with him because I loved him, not just because it was hard at home.”

“And?”

“And now it’s different. It hurts. When I saw him again it scared me, it wasn’t easy anymore because I’d made it have this importance attached to it.”

“Different expectations?”

“Yeah, I suppose so. He let me down and I’m scared of him doing it again. So it has to be totally real now or I can’t do it, I wanted to know he loves me and he doesn’t. Not enough anyway.”

“Maybe he has different expectations too?”

“Like?”

“You don’t need me to tell you that.”

I wasn’t sure what Ollie expected, but it wasn’t what he’d seen when he was with me.

“Exactly who the hell are you, Dani? Paris Hilton?”

She walked to a bench then sat down. “We’re doing this sooner than I hoped.”

“What’s your last name?”

Again she sighed. “Houseman.”

“You’re shitting me.”

“I wish I was.”

Jeremy sat down, afraid his knees would give away. “You’re… your dad is… Dani that’s…” He couldn’t form a proper sentence and opted to shut up.

“That’s pretty much how everyone reacts. It was nice while it lasted.” She went to stand up, but he held her hand and pulled her back down.

“First of all, nothing about this was nice, so cut the crap. You pretty much kidnapped and raped me… twice on that second one.”

She managed a giggle.

“I’m sorry I was a stammering idiot. I guess I’ve never been in the presence of a billionairess before. My humble plumbing and heating ass feels a little put to shame.”

She rested her cheek to his chest; he wrapped an arm around her. “I liked that you liked me for me, not who I was.”

“I don’t like you. What are you talking about?”

She gave him a playful slap on his chest. “You were starting to like me. Admit it.”

“Maybe I finally got to where I could tolerate your two a.m. jumpings.”

Again she laughed. “What Blake and I had was practically a medieval arranged marriage. His family is even more loaded than mine. I didn’t date much before him because I was always under lock and key. I was damn lucky I didn’t have a chastity belt put on me. If I was out with family without him, everyone swooned over me like a trophy. They wanted to date me because of who I was.”

“Don’t sell yourself short. You’re gorgeous.”

“You never said you like the way I look.”

“Am I dead? Come on, Dani. You have to know how beautiful you are.”

“I don’t think anyone has told me that – not anyone who didn’t want something from me, anyway.”

“Well then, I guess you can take my compliment off your list of firsts.”

“Why? You don’t want anything from me.”

“I wouldn’t go that far.” He moved her off his chest and stood up.

She followed him up. “You do like me. I knew it!”

“You are certifiable – a total nut job, one of the pickiest eaters I have ever known… but you drive me crazy.” She tiptoed up to wrap her arms around his neck, but he stopped her and held her by the wrists. “Nothing has changed, Dani. No, wait. In fact is has. It’s worse. We are even more of a mismatch than we’ve ever been. I’m still too old for you and you still need to wake up and quit your pouting. I knew I should have stuck to my guns about us. Nothing good is going to come to me for falling for you. There’s no way your family will tolerate anything less than this Blake.”
