They Called Him Marvin

Description They Called Him Marvin by Roger Stark

They were just kids, barely not teenagers, madly in love and wanting to be a family, but WW2 and a B29 got in their way. Three hundred ten days before Pearl Harbor, buck private Dean Sherman innocently went to church with a new friend in Salt Lake City. From that moment, the unsuspecting soldier travelled a remarkable, heroic path, falling in love, graduating from demanding training to become a B29 pilot, conceiving a son and entering the China, Burma and India theater of the WW2. He chronicled his story with letters home to his bride Connie that he met on that fateful Sunday, blind to the fact that fifteen hundred seventy-five days after their meeting, a Japanese swordsman would end his life. His crew, a gaggle of Corporals that dubbed themselves the Corporealizes, four officers and a tech Sargent, adventured their way across the globe. Flying the “Aluminum Trail” also called the Hump through the Himalayas, site of the most dangerous flying in the world. Landing in China to refuel and then fly on to places like Manchuria, Rangoon or even the most southern parts of Japan to drop 500 pounders. Each mission had its challenges, minus fifty degree weather in Mukden, or Japanese fighters firing away at them, a close encounter of the wrong kind, nearly missing a collision with another B29 while flying in clouds, seeing friends downed and lost because of “mechanicals,” the constant threat of running out of fuel and their greatest fear, engine fire. Transferred to the Mariana Islands, he and his crew were shot down over Nagoya, Japan as part of Mission 174, captured and declared war criminals. Connie’s letters reveal life for a brand new mother whose husband is declared MIA. The agony for both of them, he in a Japanese prison, declared a war criminal, and she just not knowing why his letters stopped coming.

Review

I received an ARC copy from the touring host for an honest review. They called him Marvin is based on true events about private Dean Sherman's life later, 1st Lieutenant Dean Sherman. A respected instructor, commander and friend on the B-29 Superfortress during World War 11. It's a story about bravery and courage that's told with tedious effort to make it an entertaining read. The in-depth knowledge from this man's experience is truly remarkable. The easy flow with which it was written made it worthwhile. An excellent read for every World War 11 reader and historical lover. The letters written between Dean and Connie adds a human quality you don't find often in war-books. Through these letters, we were not only privy to their thoughts, but learned more about the war and what it did to couples. Like being the fly against the wall scenario. Dean Sherman was a young man, with a great love for one woman, God, and a strong patriotic sense that really set him apart. It was these characteristics that caused his swift promotions. He never lost touch with his comrades and remained loyal to the very end. The B-29 Superfortress was no one's toy and once Sherman set his eyes on this enormous machine, he was sold. With a wingspan of 144 feet, it must have been quite intimidating to fly, but he and his team made it sound easy. Once they were shot down, their bravery could even be seen in the war camps, so much that the Japanese were impressed with Sherman, the man. Hence the reason Roger Stark wrote the book. This book can be classified in various genres. It is tragic and moving at the same time. Knowing what we know about the war, you know the end, but reading reliving it through the love this man shared for his wife, you stand in awe of the magnitude but loss of it all. Truly a remarkable book with lots of detail imbedded to give the reader a thorough view of the happenings during that time. Getting to know the characters an emotional insight with a deeper understanding. Definitely a must read.

Praise They Called Him Marvin by Roger Stark

“This was an amazing book. This isn't a look at war through rose colored glasses, but one that shows the reader what life was like for people from many backgrounds. A soldier, his love left behind on the home front, and those that were considered the enemy at the time. This was an intimate story that doesn't focus only on the war, and pulls the reader in quickly and easily. Historical fiction lovers, those with an interest in war history, and anyone just looking to take a few steps back in time will greatly enjoy reading this.”- Liliyana Shadowlyn, The Faerie Review “The fact that the premise for this book started with the story that Marvin told and then the letters from Dean and Connie shows how much research Roger Stark put into writing this book. I love how he revolves all of the events around the dates of the letters. The letters give the reader a reprieve from the atrocities of war and show the humanity of the soldiers fighting. There are some parts of the war that are shared that are so vivid and so horrifying - both on the part of the Japanese and on the part of the Americans. It is so heart-wrenching to think that these young (barely) men were out in those situations. My almost-93-year-old grandpa, whose name is Marvin and who served in the Korean War, also read this book, and he really liked the story. For anyone who likes to read books based on wars or just history in general, I definitely recommend this one. It is also a love story that unfolds and is eye-opening to horrors that were experienced.”-Heather, 2 Many Books, 2 Little Time “Told in prose with diary-style sections of narration as well as central figure 1st Lt Dean Harold Sherman’s own personal correspondence, this is a beautiful tale of enduring romance and the heroism of those who fought and flew during the latter part of World War Two during the United States’ conflict with Japan. What results is a touching family saga that also foreshadows the great horrors and sacrifices of life in war. Author Roger Stark has crafted an emotive work with plenty of historical richness, pathos, and heart to offer readers. One of the features which I found particularly impressive about this piece was the heartfelt presentation of the unshakeable bond between Dean and Connie, both through the curation of their own words to one another and the contextual gap-filling which Stark achieves with facts, but also emotionally sensitive additions and details. Overall, I would highly recommend They Called Him Marvin to fans of accurate wartime accounts and for enthusiasts of World War Two reports.”- K.C. Finn, Readers' Favorite

About Roger StarkThey Called Him Marvin by Roger Stark

Roger Stark, by his own admission, is a reluctant writer. But there are stories that demand to be told. When we hear them, we must pick up our pen, lest we forget and the stories be lost. Six years ago, in a quiet conversation with his friend, Marvin, he learned the tragic story of his father, a WW2 B-29 Airplane Commander, shot down over Nagoya, Japan, just months before the end of the war. The telling of the story that evening by this half orphan was so moving and full of emotion, it compelled Roger to ask if he could write the story. The result being “They Called Him Marvin.” Roger Stark’s life has been profoundly touched in so many ways by being part of documenting this sacred story. He prays that we never forget, as a people, the depth of sacrifice that was made by ordinary people like Marvin and his father and mother on our behalf.

Excerpt:

10 December 1944, The Same Damn Movie … In Puerto Rico the crew was quite happy to watch the new release The Lady Takes a Chance starring John Wayne and Jean Arthur. Coincidently when they reached British Guiana the same movie was featured. Not to be deterred the crew again enjoyed the film. When they got to Brazil and it was again the featured picture show, some murmuring occurred. The Corporalies, were feeling cheated. When they found the movie would be playing at their fourth stop also they complained to Dean. “Sir, ain’t the Army got any other movies?” “We know the lines better than the actors.” “We know John Wayne is going to eat the lamb chops because Jean Arthur cooked them for him even tho he is a beef man.” “Maybe there will be something new at our next stop,” was the consolation Dean offered. After crossing the Atlantic The Corporalies showed signs of giving up on the movies. But in Khartoum The Corporalies forced into the NCO Club by the searing heat and therefore ‘forced‘ to drink cold beer all day had a terrible yearning, near evening, for a movie. “Howell, go see what’s playing at the movies tonight.” ordered his fellow Corporalies. By virtue of being the youngest Howell was often the brunt of such requests especially after three or four beers. He had given up protesting that he was the same rank as them. In fact as the Central Gunner, he was in charge of the other gunners in combat, but as the youngest of four boys at home he felt a strange comfort in re-playing the role with his combat brothers. “And damn it, don’t come back if it is The Lady Takes a Chance.” Of course he discovered that The Lady was indeed tonights special feature. On the way back to the NCO Club with the sad news that John Wayne was again eating those lamb chops even here on the edge of the Nile Rivers, he met his Airplane Commander. “Sir, they are playing that same damn movie here, oh sorry sir, that same John Wayne movie is playing here. We are sick of it, Sir, ain’t the Army got any other movies?” “Evan, the reason that movie shows up everywhere we go, is that we have been tasked with delivering it to our final destination while allowing each layover airfield to use it.” Howell stared at his Airplane Commander as his cognitive impaired brain tried to process. The light finally came on for him, a bit dim, but it came on. “Oh, Sir, I see Sir, I’ll tell the boys.” And off he wandered, not in the direction of the boys, but in the direction of his bunk, taking his comrades threat to not return with bad news seriously.

Calling all Book Reviewers and Authors

Valid till 31 April. Link

As an author I am always searching for ways to get my book out there and getting reviews.

Each book I have self-published is a constant battle to get the ball rolling. Sometimes I become discouraged because of the lack of response or reviewers dropping me.

The writing business is not kind or fair and to stay positive is not always possible. We spend a great deal of money to write, polish, then publish it and the only validation we have is when readers buy the book and hopefully leave a review.

As a reviewer, I understand the responsibility of being consistent and trustworthy. Because of this I am basically fully booked for this year.

But in my search, I came across this group on Facebook and have started to join the promos and read the case studies provided. You must be a member to read them but worthwhile to do so.

Evan Gow, the owner of the group is a hands-on fellow that really helps authors to become noticed in a world where it is a constant fight for recognition.

Here is one case study I found very useful and there are links for reviewers where you can request a copy and become part of the team.

My newest book, Love at War, is also there. Have a look.

Their enemies tried to outsmart them. Obedience their only defence.
Whisked to picturesque Valletta, a lonely nurse met her soul connection. It set the bar in a stirring plot of spiritual and physical survival as a determined warlord in Africa and a cunning wife in America trapped them. The healing sands of Iraq, their only hope.
Passionate about her work, war-torn South Sudan offered Sonia Main peace. When a man from her past confronted her once more, she had a choice to make. A choice that would influence her life.
Could Sonia let go of the past and see a new future?
Would her dreams continue to haunt her? Or would the warm sun of Africa burn away her fears?
Curt McGee was a man bound by honour and duty. It took him away from home for long periods of time.
Caught in infidelity, Curt's wife’s thinking left him astounded, shocked even. His children prey to an unthinkable enemy.
Would he get beyond his wife's betrayal?
Could he save his children?
What decisions should he make?
Co-workers devised a plan: book a flight to enjoy a weekend in Malta. An island in the Mediterranean Sea that offered tranquillity and peace to weary souls.
Here, two worlds connect, and the result would change them both for eternity.
Meeting by chance, love confronted them, a love so great that they could not deny it. But time played a trick and demanded a price. A price so high that it would strip them of everything before they could experience the joy of a future.
Obedience was better than sacrifice, revealed the pages of the Holy Book. Would they yield or follow their own way?
They could not run or hide from the onslaught. Their enemies' attacks growing in intensity. Crafty tricks added to the confusion, their fears real. It stripped them of their hopes and dreams. They could only go one way.
When Tau Gbadamosi met Sonia, he had a tough time understanding his feelings. War ravished his country. The enormous plight for help too great for one man or one fight. Faced with loyalty, he had to decide. A decision that would cost him. Would he fail the test?
Africa's hopes and dreams burned brightly in the harsh African sun. Poverty and lack the driving force for many ‘do-gooders’. It left the continent in a starving grip. But when a warlord sets his sight on the Red Cross nurse, all hell broke loose. No one could stand in his way.
Only God could stop him.
Lover of my soul
Oh, my Sovereign Lord,
I bless your Holy name.
Your Kingdom is eternal
Your words are priceless as pearls.
Your favour is beyond any riches.
Oh Lord, my Father,
Perfect is your timing.

A Case Study at Story Origin

Posted by Marilyn Pike on the Facebook group by request of Evan Gow, this is an article I wrote about the effectiveness of gaining book reviews through StoryOrigin.
🙂
Very happy with StoryOrigin for gaining both book reviews and newsletter subscribers, I’m writing this article to describe my experience with book reviews. The stats provided below occurred with very little effort on my part. I plan to return to working on gaining more book reviews in the near future. As you can see, so far I’ve been most successful in gaining reviews for the books in my YA Paranormal Mystery / YA Urban Fantasy series.
MY REVIEW COPY STATISTICS:
Mission Critical: Journey to the Red Planet (Science Fiction novelette):
- Review copies requested from readers through StoryOrigin, approved by me: 4.
- Book reviews from those readers: 1. (That reader posted a 5-star review on Goodreads and BookBub.)
The Other (Science Fiction novel):
- Review copies requested from readers through StoryOrigin, approved by me: 5.
- Book reviews from those readers: 0.
Blood and Ashes (Paranormal Romance novel):
- Reviews requested from readers through StoryOrigin, approved by me: 5.
- Book reviews from those readers: 2. (No links were provided to reviews posted online. However, one 3-star review in which the reader said they would read more of my books and one 4-star review were posted on StoryOrigin.)
Shade (Book #1 in YA Paranormal Mystery / YA Urban Fantasy Series):
- Reviews requested from readers through StoryOrigin, approved by me: 43.
- Book reviews from those readers: 18 (ten 5-star reviews, four 4-star reviews, three 3-star reviews, and one 2-star review, with one of the 4-star reviews posted only on StoryOrigin).
Shade and the Skinwalkers (Book #2 in YA Paranormal Mystery / YA Urban Fantasy Series):
- Reviews requested from readers through StoryOrigin, approved by me: 40.
- Book reviews from those readers: 14 (nine 5-star reviews, four 4-star reviews, and one 3-star review, with one of the 4-star reviews posted only on StoryOrigin).
Shade and the Castle by the Sea (Book #3 in YA Paranormal Mystery / YA Urban Fantasy Series):
- Reviews requested from readers through StoryOrigin, approved by me: 31.
- Book reviews from those readers: 10 (six 5-star reviews and four 4-star reviews, with one of the 4-star reviews posted only on StoryOrigin).
Shade and the Pure-Blood Faeries (Book #4 in YA Paranormal Mystery / YA Urban Fantasy Series):
- Reviews requested from readers through StoryOrigin, approved by me: 30.
- Book reviews from those readers: 10 (seven 5-star reviews, one 4-star review, and two 3-star reviews, with the 4-star review posted only on StoryOrigin).
HOW I SENT TRAFFIC TO THE REVIEW PAGES:
The most exciting services offered by StoryOrigin are the multi-author promotions that authors set up for participants to gain book reviews, book sales and newsletter subscribers. So far, I’ve actively participated in 26 of these promotions: 6 for gaining book reviews, 9 for gaining book sales, and 11 for gaining newsletter subscribers. As you can see, I gained 54 book reviews through only 6 promotions on StoryOrigin. After that, I focused more on the promotions designed to gain newsletter subscribers, but I plan to return to book review promotions in the near future. After I sign up for a book promotion, I announce it on my scheduled date in the following places: my newsletter where I have over 8,000 subscribers, on Facebook, Twitter and my Goodreads blog. That’s it. It’s pretty easy. All the authors in a promotion promoting at the same time is what leads to its success. I especially recommend joining promotions run by established authors, especially those who are strict about requiring all participants to share the promotions with their followers.
MY PROCESS FOR VETTING REVIEWERS:
I only accept reviewers who provide links in their StoryOrigin background information to their review pages on at least one of the following: Amazon and other bookstore sites, BookBub, Goodreads, etc. If someone requests a book but hasn’t provided any proof that they post reviews online, I don’t approve them out of caution they may only be looking for free books. I’d also be hesitant to accept anyone who consistently posts negative book reviews, although I’ve never been approached by anyone who does that.
MY FAVORITE PART ABOUT MANAGING MY REVIEW COPIES THROUGH STORY ORIGIN:
It’s so easy! I used to send out hundreds of Advanced Review Copies of my books to ARC teams. That was a LOT of work. On StoryOrigin, I just post my books, then take part in book promotions. This works well, as there are always a lot of book promotions taking place.

Logo t-shirts, glasses with frames two sizes too big,
and a hard-core love of music and ice cream.
That’s how I’d describe my best friend, Liam.
Back then, we were inseparable.

I took off to California with my new college boyfriend, Roger,
ready to get away from the dirt and cows in my podunk town
wanting to start a new life with him.

Fired, dumped, and evicted my life was reduced
to a box of cereal without any milk.
Nowhere to go except back home,
where I had left everything and everyone behind.

Athletic build, five o’ clock shadow and that
same of love of salted, caramel ice cream.
That’s how I’d describe Liam, six years later.
Except, he wasn’t my best friend anymore.

Listen To Me

Description Listen To Me by Lynne Podrat

This memoir was written to honor my youngest brother’s influence over my life, the good, the bad, and the ugly of living with a Down Syndrome sibling. It tells the story of the children in my family, despite our parents’ frailties, remaining committed to each other through life’s many changes and separations. Who I am today is directly related to the who I needed to become.

Praise Listen To Me by Lynne Podrat

“As the intertwined life stories of the author and her brother Bruce emerge, the story takes on a new tone. Bitterness and rancor are replaced with a gentle kind of mellowness and a roaring-fire-on-a-cold-winter-day kind of warmth. This is underscored when the author writes that her plans for Bruce were “to open and enrich his world.” In the end, however, she realizes how being with Bruce “accomplished so much more.” She realizes how this “sweet small man” and “Bruce’s” capacity to love and to “just go on because there was no other choice” profoundly influenced her life. And how Bruce opened and enriched her world. Oh, and the title? You’ll have to read the book for yourself to figure that one out. Flavored with gentle humor and tongue-in-cheek wit, Listen to Me isn’t a long read. At about 30,000 words, you can finish it in an afternoon. But the reflections and insights will reverberate much longer.”- Kristine, Pages and Paws.

“This book is a touching story about the unconditional love between an older sister and her brother, Bruce. The prose is uplifting and inspirational, without the traces of ableism that can be found in other such works. The overall message is a plea to see people for who they are, not their diagnosis and aims to increase disability awareness.”- Laura Quinn, Laura Quinn Writes

“This memoir is exactly what I needed. It made me laugh and cry and helped me appreciate the people in my life even more than I already did. Bruce's love for his family, friends, and favorite rock 'n' roll idols lives on through this book. His larger-than-life personality left such an impression on me; I can honestly say that I feel like I know him without ever having met him. I think about him from time to time and his essence inspires hope in me, showing me how precious it is to have an innocent view of life at any age. This book means so much to me. Lynne Podrat is a true artist with her words and the life she created around the people she loves. Her tenacity and devotion to her family—and herself—is unparalleled. She is a badass. If I could just accomplish half of what she has, I would be happy.”-Sandi, Proof Reader Sandi

Review

"The hardest thing I have ever done in my life, to date, was to pretend everything was perfect when I visited my mother’s hospital room that day." Lynne Podrat.

This is the memoir of Lynne Podrat and how she had to learn to become the woman, she was meant to be. After an honest conversation with God, she realized she was on earth to do something no one else could do. This became her quest and saving grace.

Throughout her journey and relationship with Bruce, her life was shaped by her determination, willingness to stand for what she believed, and helping people. It all started when her youngest brother was born.

At thirteen, she made the choice to care for her brother when her parents decided they were not mentally fit to care for a Down Syndrome baby. This created a sense of love and duty within her that would propel her into her career.

"You may not have wanted education, but education wanted and needed you. This was your true purpose.” Lynne Podrat.

The honest reflection of her life and that of her brother was heartwarming and touching. Being honest with her feelings and giving us a glimpse into this remarkable man's life helps one understand the many difficulties a down syndrome person can have but also the joys you can experience in life. All it needs is love and dedication, and the author definitely had that in spades.

This is a lovely memoir that not only brings justice to her brother's life but helps us to understand how you can live in your destiny despite the many obstacles you face. Truly a wonderful testimony of what sibling love is.

Thanks for the opportunity to read this book.

Jerica with her Uncle Bruce at Thanksgiving

Excerpt

During one of our Sunday visits, I asked my brother to run some errands with me. “Sure, where are we going?” he said. Not wanting to confuse him with too many details,

“To the bookstore for some health cookbooks,” I explained.

“OOHH, cooking, Yes, I’d like those books.” Laughing, we left for Barnes and Noble, not far from the house. Once there, I guided him to a large table filled with books.

“Star Trek! Lynnie, Lynnie! Star Trek!” He shouted with excitement for all to hear. Sure enough, he held up a Star Trek book, the original, one of his favorite television shows. “Correct. How did you know, honey?” I asked knowing he could not read and curious as to how he knew. He shook his head, hand on his forehead. The obligatory eye roll and deep sigh one does when dealing with the feebleminded.

“Lynne, listen to me,” pointing to the cover. “That says,” and he proceeded to spell, “S-T- A-R T-R-E-K, Star Trek—and that is the enterprise.” He had memorized the words having watched the show so often.

“Stay here and look at your book while I check these cookbooks,” I had instructed while becoming immersed in two Whole 30 books trying to discern the differences, forgetting the time and him. “So, Brucie. Are you ready to go?” No response. Looking up, Bruce was nowhere in sight. Not panicked but a tad concerned, I asked the people around the table if they had noticed where the young man standing with me had gone. Pointing to the couches, sure enough, there was my brother, one leg crossed over the other in the coffee/lounge area reading his book. I walk over, not entirely pleased with this, but before I could say anything, Bruce looked up and said, “Lynnie, how about we get coffee and you can sit and read. Go ahead. If you have trouble, I can help. You get the coffee. I want milk and sugar.” My turn to roll my eyes, shake my head, and sigh. It was impossible to stay annoyed. However, he did need to acknowledge my concern at his walking away.

“Brucie, I am a little annoyed with you.”
“Why? What I do?” his eyes wide with innocence. I am not David, so I just fixed him with a look. “Why do you think I might be upset with you?” That was the clincher as he did not like having me upset. “I walked away.” I nodded my head. “When you walked away, what could you have done so I would have known where you were?”

“I don’t know.” I continued my look.
Looking down, he grinned, “I could tell you.” “Yes. Let’s practice what you will tell me next time.”

Barnes and Noble became our new home away from home, visiting so often that the ladies placed our order upon seeing us.

“Hi, Bruce! You can come get your coffee when‐ ever you are ready.”

Instead of the china cups, our coffee was poured in to-go cups so Bruce could take responsibility for getting our order while flirting with his new fan club. This was one of the many special things I would miss when we moved.

Once we were back home having finished our coffee visit, chores, reading, rolling coins, and eating a snack, Bruce and I settled in to listen to his favorite music on an old laptop I had designated as his. Bruce had a journal we kept at my house where he practiced his writing and more reading. Writing is contagious, so I either write poetry or thoughts about teaching and work on Sudoku puzzles. He dated the page to include the month, day, and year. He then wrote the titles of albums and two of the songs he loved from that album. We then drew. Actually, I drew. “Lynne, can you help me?” he asked with this pathetic face, and then we colored the page. He got such pleasure returning to pages and reading the letters to me, triumphant when he recognized words. This never failed to make me laugh and make my heart happy for him.

To ensure Bruce’s inclusion with family, Jerica joined us on as many Sundays as her schedule allowed, Thanksgiving, and all Jewish holiday dinners. Randy, Laurie, Maddie, and Emily stayed with us on their northern visits during Christmas, sharing many activities with their Uncle Bruce.
