5 Star review for a well-deserved book.
I received the
book from the publisher for an honest review.
Jacob P Howell
had an interesting life. Born in 1803, it was filled with drama, heartbreak and
sorrow but he always got back on his feet. His footprint left a trail of
determination, knowledge, skill and sound advice. A legacy that stood the test
of time. His enormous wealth started with one gold nugget that changed his way
of life forever.
Born as the son
of a dirty, penniless farmer, Jake understood the value of hard work, learning
and experience. His father giving him the solid foundation to further himself
as a businessman.
The author’s
writing allowed you a brief glimpse of this remarkable man’s life. A quick read
that takes you back to 1800, when life was very hard, and opportunities meagre.
The author giving us a very good understanding of the way of life, the
difficulties they faced as well as slavery and education of women during that
time.
What I take from
this book is still very true today. Never underestimate the value of a good education
and hard work. Nothing comes for free and if you are willing to do your part
you will reap the benefit thereof.
Especially through
the lives of his children, this was illustrated very well. That, and the bond
of family. It doesn’t matter what circumstances have brought us together, we
stand together. Jake was a family man, along with his loving wife, Sarah, they
had a strong bond with each of their children. A bond only broken by misguided
lies. Some used their upbringing to better themselves and the world, others squander
it away.
Truly a very
good book that brought justice to this impressive figure.
When he picked up that shiny stone from the small stream, nine-year-old Jake Howell would not have believed that it would trigger America's first gold rush and that he would become one of the world's richest and most admired men.
